Newsday staffers win awards at NABJ event

Newsday photographer Thomas A. Ferrara and sports reporter Kimberley A. Martin won Salute to Excellence awards Saturday night presented by the National Association of Black Journalists.
The annual event was held in Washington, D.C.
In the single photograph category for newspapers over 150,000 circulation, Ferrara won for “Dunia’s Smile,” a portrait of a child undergoing facial reconstructive surgery.
In the sports category for newspapers over 150,000, Martin won for “Lorenzo Mauldin: Survivor,” about the Jets linebacker who had been a foster-care child desperate for guidance.
The NABJ competition honors work from print, television, radio and online media.
