Newsday wins 5 New York Press Club awards

Newsday won five awards in the New York Press Club’s Awards for Journalism contest, with honors including the newspaper’s online coverage of the presidential debate at Hofstra University.

Judges selected the best among 460 pieces of work in more than two dozen categories and presented on media platforms including television, newspapers, radio, magazines, newswires and the internet.

Newsday reporter Scott Eidler won for “Power Player’s $1.4M Tax Debt” in the continuing coverage category, while Delthia Ricks was honored for her story, “Cancer Researcher’s ‘Eureka’ Moment,” in feature — science, medicine and technology.

Thomas A. Ferrara took top honors in feature photography for “Doubly Devoted, the Tardif Twins.”

The Newsday staff won for its online coverage of the Hofstra debate last fall in a category added for 2016 — presidential race/special event.

Graphics breaking down fatal car accidents on Long Island from 2012 to 2015 by Joe Diglio, Tim Healy, Joshua Stewart and Ryan Restivo won in the infographic category.

News 12 Long Island won two awards — for feature sports reporting and humor.

The awards will be presented June 5 at the Water Club in Manhattan.
