Newsday and News 12 Long Island received nine awards for journalism in print, online and on television at the New York Press Club awards dinner at the Water Club in Manhattan Monday night.

Newsday’s reporters, videographers and photographers culled eight awards in continuing coverage, crime, entertainment, feature reporting-sports, food writing, special event reporting and spot news-photo, while News 12 Long Island received honors in the humor category.

“We are so proud that the New York Press Club has recognized our colleagues’ strong journalism — in investigations, enterprise, feature writing, photography, multimedia storytelling and digital presentation,” said Deborah Henley, Newsday’s editor.

Judges of the annual contest, who include prominent journalists, selected the best work in more than 25 categories on media platforms including television, newspapers, radio, magazines, newswires and the internet.

Newsday’s Sandra Peddie and Ted Phillips won for “Nassau County Corruption” in the continuing coverage category, while the newspaper’s multimedia staff and Bridget Murphy took honors in the crime category for “The Gilgo Beach Murders, Five Years Later” and “Death of an Inmate.”

Entertainment reporter Verne Gay won for “Dave’s World” and multimedia staffers Chris Ware, Robert Cassidy, Jeffrey Basinger, Raychel Brightman and Arnold Miller won in the feature reporting-sports category for “Vinny the Dentist.”

Newsday’s Peter Gianotti won a food writing award for “Mangia!” and Newsday staff won an award in the special event reporting category for “Hard Knocks.”

Newsday’s J. Conrad Williams won in the spot news-photo category for “Fire Fighter.”

News 12 Long Island’s Kevin Maher, Daniel Jacobsen and Ryan McDonald won an award in the humor category for “Softball Surprise!”
