At least three weeks of nightly road closures on northbound Route 135 began Monday night in the towns of Oyster Bay and Hempstead, state transportation officials said.

The closures, affecting all northbound lanes between Merrick Road and Hempstead Turnpike weeknights between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., are needed to renew the aging pavement, install planted medians and provide updated safety improvements, the New York State Department of Transportation said in a news release.

After workers finish the southern portion of Route 135, between Merrick Road and Jerusalem Avenue, closures will be reduced to the section between Routes 105 and 24.

Northbound NY Route 135 motorists are being be detoured to NY Route 107/Hicksville Road at all east and west roadways, then back to NY Route 135 at NY Route 24.

Delays are expected, though, and the DOT advised drivers to seek alternate routes.
