A North Lindenhurst man found dying on a hamlet street Tuesday morning was the victim of a hit and run, Suffolk police said.

At 9:20 a.m., an injured James Angotta, 63, was discovered in the turning lane of Wellwood Avenue, north of New Horizons Boulevard, police said in a statement.

"Upon further investigation by Major Case Unit detectives," police said, "Angotta was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene."

The victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip and pronounced dead, officials said.

Police on Tuesday night did not provide a description of the suspect, the getaway vehicle, or whether they had made an arrest.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call the Major Case unit at 631-852-6553 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
