A 66-year-old Northport bicyclist died while riding with a group of friends over the weekend in Weston, Vt., state police in Vermont said.

Police say Constantine Perakakis was wearing a helmet and there was no sign of a collision with a motor vehicle at the time of the accident Saturday morning. Perakakis suffered extensive head trauma and was taken to Springfield Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say a group of friends with whom Perakakis was cycling lost sight of him as they began a downward descent on Route 100 near Terrible Mountain. They found him lying on the highway unconscious and called 911.

Police say Perakakis was an experienced cyclist. They believe excessive speed and the condition of the roadway contributed to the crash, but an autopsy will be performed.

Attempts to reach the family Monday were unsuccessful.
