Bob Chappuis, 89, Heisman runner-up, dies

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- College Football Hall of Famer and 1947 Heisman Trophy runner-up Bob Chappuis has died. He was 89.

Michigan University officials said Chappuis was hospitalized after a fall earlier in the week and died late Thursday at the UM Hospital, surrounded by his wife, Ann, and their four children.

Chappuis played for the Wolverines in 1942 before his career was interrupted by World War II. He was a gunner and radio operator on B-25 bombers, before being shot down over Italy. He remained in that country until the end of the war.

The triple-threat back resumed playing at Michigan after the war. He led the "Mad Magicians" to an undefeated season and the national title and finished second to Notre Dame's John Lujack in the Heisman balloting in 1947.
