Michael Martino Sr., a former municipal bond trader and a former member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, died of small cell lung cancer Sunday in Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola. He was 70 and lived in East Meadow.

Martino, who had worked for several bond firms, last worked for Northeast Securities in Uniondale, his family said.

Family members said he spent his youth in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, where he attended Our Lady of Loreto Roman Catholic School.

"His career as municipal bond trader spanned more than four decades. He had worked at Northeast since 2007," said his son, Michael Martino Jr., of East Meadow, who is the spokesman for Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.

Martino met his wife, June Angela D'Aurio, in the Manhattan office of the Chicago-based Halsey Stewart bonding company in 1964 and they were married in 1967.

"Mom said she always wondered how he tricked her into marrying him," said Michael. Jr.

The couple moved from Richmond Hills, Queens, to East Rockaway in 1970, where they began to raise their children. They then moved to Lynbrook, where they lived for 30 years.

But they stayed active in St. Raymond of Penyafort Roman Catholic Church in East Rockaway, where they were involved with Marriage Encounter, Pre-Cana and Teams of Our Lady.

"Dad had a sharp wit and a clever sense of humor," said Michael Jr. "He was known for great timing as a master joke teller."

His son added that his father loved fishing, "and on the water he was 'fluke man.' "

Besides his wife and oldest son, he is survived by another son, Christopher, and a daughter, Kathryn Sara Miranda, and three grandchildren, all of East Meadow.

A funeral Mass is set for 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in St. Raymond. Burial will follow at St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale.

The family ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
