ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Vince Banonis, the starting center for the Detroit Lions championship teams in 1952-53, has died He was 89.

The Lions said Monday that Banonis died Saturday.

Banonis was a star at the University of Detroit and was drafted in 1942 by the Chicago Cardinals. His sports career took a break while he served in the Navy in World War II, but he helped Chicago win the 1947 title before going to Detroit. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. - AP
