Newsman Hal Bruno dies at 83

WASHINGTON -- Hal Bruno, the longtime political director for ABC News and a political analyst who hosted a weekly radio program, has died. He was 83.

Harold Bruno III says his father died Tuesday at a hospital in Bethesda, Md. The son says the cause was heart arrhythmia after a fall.

Bruno worked for newspapers and spent 18 years at Newsweek before landing at ABC News in 1978. For most of the 1980s and 1990s, he oversaw campaign and election coverage for ABC television and radio, where his duties included moderating a 1992 vice-presidential debate. His radio program, "Hal Bruno's Washington," aired until his retirement in 1999.

Bruno also was a volunteer firefighter, and from 1999 to 2008 he served as chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. -- AP
