Official: Dog left near death in cage on side of Brentwood road

A dog was left near death in a cage on the side of a Brentwood road Sunday, according to the Suffolk County SPCA.

The Yorkie/silky terrier-type dog, which was wearing a skull-and-crossbones collar, was found by motorists who spotted the cage while driving on Candlewood Road. The good Samaritans drove the male dog to Atlantic Coast Veterinary Hospital in Bohemia. It had open sores on its body, was covered in feces and urine, and was extremely matted.

The hospital notified the SPCA, which is offering a $2,000 award for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

According to Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross, the dog is 6 or 7 years old and weighed only 4.6 pounds, less than half of what it should weigh.

“This is as bad as it gets,” Gross said of the level of neglect.

Atlantic Coast administrator Dana Cremen said early Wednesday afternoon that the dog was resting comfortably and that his long-term prognosis is good. 

The dog is being called Bean after getting the name from a hospital receptionist.
