Officials: Dozens of Labor Day weekend DWI arrests
Police officials in Nassau and Suffolk counties made dozens of driving while intoxicated arrests over the Labor Day weekend, officials said Monday.
In Suffolk, from 4 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Monday morning, there were 56 DWI arrests and one boating while intoxicated arrest. Last year, for the entire weekend, 4 p.m. Friday to Tuesday at 8 a.m. there were 64 DWI and no BWI arrests, police said.
In Suffolk, for the first time during a Labor Day weekend, police set up sobriety checkpoints on the water to stop drunken boaters.
Michael Albinski, 27, of East Northport, was arrested a little after 11 p.m. Sunday night during a routine patrol and charged with boating while intoxicated, authorities said. Two officers from the police department's marine bureau were making rounds in the area of Ocean Bay Park Ferry Terminal in Ocean Bay Park when they noticed that a boat, a 1976 Sea Ray, didn't have the required navigation lights. Officers stopped the boat and while interviewing Albinski, they said that he appeared to be intoxicated. He was taken to shore and arrested, police said. He was also charged with operating a vessel after sunset without navigation lights displayed.
By Monday evening, Nassau police had not made any BWI arrest.
