Officials: Equipment problems lead to LIRR delays

Already operating on a modified storm-related schedule that called for the cancellation of 10 morning rush-hour trains Monday, the Long Island Rail Road said equipment problems have led to delays on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches and the City Zone.

The nature of those equipment problems were not immediately clear, but the railroad said some trains were running up to 16 minutes late.

Delays on the Port Jefferson Branch came after the 5:59 a.m. train from Port Jefferson, which was due in Hunterspoint Avenue at 7:41 a.m., hit "an unauthorized individual on the tracks at East New York Station," the railroad said in a statement on the MTA website. Customers were to be accommodated by the 6:18 a.m. train from Port Jefferson due in Hunterspoint at 8 a.m.

That train was to make an added stop at Mineola.

The Monday morning modifications are as follows:

City Zone: The 6:45 a.m. train from Port Jefferson is canceled because of weather-related equipment trouble. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:57 a.m. train from Port Jefferson, due to arrive in Hunterspoint Avenue at 8:43 a.m.

Babylon Branch: The 6:57 a.m. train from Freeport, due to arrive at Penn Station at 7:40 a.m., is canceled. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:32 a.m. train from Babylon, which will make added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre; the 7:29 a.m. train from Freeport also is canceled. Customers will be accommodated by the 7:11 a.m. train from Massapequa Park, making added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre; the 8:10 a.m. train from Freeport is canceled, with customers to be accommodated by the 7:45 a.m. train from Babylon, making added stops at Freeport, Baldwin, and Rockville Centre; the 8:25 a.m. train from Freeport is canceled, too. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:03 a.m. train from Babylon, due to arrive in Penn Station at 9:11 a.m., with stops at Freeport, Baldwin and Rockville Centre.

Far Rockaway Branch: The 8:10 a.m. train from Far Rockaway is canceled. Customers will be accommodated by the 8:21 a.m. train from Far Rockaway, which will be making added stops at Rosedale, Laurelton, and Locust Manor.

Port Jefferson Branch: The 5:59 a.m. train from Port Jefferson is canceled because of a non-passenger train striking an unauthorized individual on the tracks at East New York Station. Customers will be accommodated by the 6:18 a.m. train from Port Jefferson, due to arrive at Hunterspoint Avenue at 8 a.m., with an added stop at Mineola; the 6:57 a.m. train from Port Jefferson is operating 16 minutes late from Port Jefferson due to equipment trouble before departure; the 7:12 a.m. train from Huntington is operating 13 minutes late from Huntington due to equipment trouble before departure. The 7:35 a.m. train from Port Jefferson is being held due to equipment trouble.

Port Washington Branch: The 6:17 a.m. train from Port Washington is canceled. Customers will accommodated by the 6:27 a.m. train from Port Washington.

Ronkonkoma Branch: The 6:54 a.m. train from Central Islip is operating 10 minutes late because of congestion caused by a delayed eastbound train.

West Hempstead Branch: The 7:36 a.m. train from West Hempstead is not canceled and will run as scheduled. However, the 8:54 a.m. train from West Hempstead due 9:40 a.m. at Atlantic Terminal is canceled. Customers will be accommodated by the 10:02 a.m. train from West Hempstead, which will terminate at Valley Stream, where customers will need to transfer to trains to Atlantic Terminal and Penn Station.
