Still, some retailers are open, if only with shortened hours. In general, major grocery and big-box stores are closed, but those in need of a coffee from Dunkin' or a candy fix from 7-Eleven should call first before venturing out.
Here's what's open and closed:
Government buildings
All county, state and federal administrative buildings across New York State, including courts and the district attorney’s offices, are closed. Courts are only open for arraignments. Emergency services will be working around the clock, however.
Schools
All public schools on Long Island are closed, and virtually all are on holiday break through the New Year.
Banks and markets
All banks are closed, as they are on all federal holidays. The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and the bond markets are closed as well.
The United States Postal Service is closed. No regular mail will be delivered.
Major retailers
Major retailers, including Walmart, Target and Costco will be closed. But some major drugstore chains will be open, with limited hours, including CVS and Walmart. Their pharmacies will be closed, however.
Major fast-food chains and some restaurants will be open, McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s will have many of their stores open. Many Long Island Dunkin' and Starbucks stores will be open on limited hours. 7-Elevens and many other convenience stores and gas stations will be open.
