Driver charged in fatal Harlem River crash, victim identified as Kiara Jenkins of Jersey City, New Jersey, police say
A woman who died at a hospital after the sedan in which she was a passenger hit a tree in Manhattan was identified Sunday night and the driver charged with driving under the influence and without a license, police said.
Kiara Jenkins, 24, of Jersey City, New Jersey, was pronounced dead Sunday at Harlem Hospital Center after suffering a heart attack, police said.
Police identified the driver of the vehicle in the early Sunday crash as Shanelle Emanuel, 24, of 153 Avenue E in Bayonne, New Jersey.
The crash on the Harlem River Drive temporarily closed the northbound and southbound lanes of the road near the Willis Avenue exit in Manhattan for more than two hours Sunday morning, the NYPD said.
Police said the single-car crash occurred at 5:41 a.m. when the Dodge sedan heading northbound on the Harlem River Drive attempted to take the exit for the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge near 121st Street before striking the tree. A third unidentified passenger was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
