Pedestrian hit, killed by garbage truck in Bay Shore, police say
A pedestrian was fatally struck by a garbage truck in Bay Shore on Friday morning, Suffolk County police said.
The fatality is the second this week related to a garbage or sanitation truck on Long Island.
The 2010 Mack dump truck was traveling east on Sunrise Highway South Service Road near Redmond Avenue around 11:10 a.m. when Gloria Prietto, 81, of Bay Shore, was hit, police said.
Prietto was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said. The driver, Gerald Hautman, of Jet Sanitation, stayed at the scene. The Huntington Station resident, 41, was not hurt. The investigation is ongoing.
A Town of Hempstead worker standing on the back of a sanitation truck was killed Wednesday when the vehicle backed up toward a parked truck, authorities said.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
