Long Island man, 19, killed in wrong-way crash in upstate Ulster County

Two men, including one from Long Island, died Sunday following a head-on collision in upstate Ulster County, New York State Police said.
Peter Bonenfant, 19, of Smithtown and Philip Jacobus, 72, of Manhattan, died after they collided on Route 28 in the Town of Olive, state troopers said in a news release.
The crash occurred about 6:47 a.m. when Bonenfant crossed the 2024 Chevrolet he was driving west into oncoming traffic “for unknown reasons," striking Jacobus in an eastbound 2021 Mercedes-Benz, police said.
First responders extracted both men from their vehicles and initiated life-saving measures, the release said. Bonenfant was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston, where he was pronounced deceased. Jacobus was transported to the same hospital before being transferred to MidHudson Regional Hospital where he died of his injuries.
State troopers are still investigating the crash, according to the release.
