Tom Suozzi (D Ð Long Island, Queens), embraces Zahra, 6, and Omar Wali, 8, as their father Mohammad Wali joins them at a news conference Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at WaliÕs restaurant in Manhattan. Wali, an American citizen who lives in Plainview, Long Island, has been working to secure US citizenship for his wife, Aishah Wali, and his youngest child, 1-year-old Yasir (Omar and Zahra are already American citizens). When the Taliban took over Kabul, he immediately reached out to SuozziÕs office for emergency help in evacuating his family. Working with the State Department and various channels on the ground in Afghanistan, Suozzi and his office arranged passage for the family to make its way to the airport in Kabul. The family was instructed to place a red bandanna on the youngest child and hold him up high so that US military would recognize the child and escort the family safely within the gate at the airport. After flying to Qatar and then Ramstein Air Base in Germany, the Wali family was reunited in the United States late last week, two weeks after first reaching out to SuozziÕs office.
