Police search in Brooklyn triggers delay on LIRR

Long Island Rail Road service between Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica was suspended for about 15 minutes in both directions Wednesday night while police searched for a stabbing suspect on the train tracks in the tunnel between East New York and Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, police said.

The suspect was still at large as of 10:30 p.m.

According to a New York Police Department report, a 26-year-old man, who authorities declined to identify, was getting off a C train at about 6:50 p.m. at the Rockaway Avenue station when he was stabbed in the back with an unknown object.

The victim was taken to Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn for treatment but his condition and the nature of his injuries was not available.

Meredith Daniels, a spokeswoman for the MTA, said the power to the tracks was cut at 8:30 p.m. as officers from the NYPD with the assistance of MTA police looked for the suspect.

"I don't know if there was a chase," Daniels said.

She said power was restored at 8:44 p.m.

Daniels said that during the service interruption the 8:14 p.m. train from Jamaica that was due at Atlantic Terminal at 8:44 p.m. was delayed and that the 8:30 p.m. train from Atlantic Terminal that was due in Hempstead at 9:21 p.m. originated in Jamaica instead of Atlantic Terminal. She said the 8:01 p.m. train from Hempstead that was due at Atlantic Terminal at 8:51 p.m. was also delayed.

The incident remained under investigation.
