Suffolk County police said they have reopened the Long Island Expressway from exits 68 to 71 after that portion was closed in both directions due to icy conditions.

Police said that area of the LIE was closed at about 5:50 p.m. and that eastbound lanes reopened at about 7:30 p.m.; westbound lanes at about 8 p.m.

But police still urge drivers to use "extreme caution," a police spokesman said.

The news release indicated that about 100 officers from Highway Patrol, the sixth and seventh precincts, emergency services, K-9 officers and officers from the Riverhead Town police and parks police assisted in closing and reopening the roads while they were being sanded.

"Drivers are still advised to remain off the roads," police said in a statement, adding that there is still ice on many roadways.

"Please use extreme caution if driving tonight," police said.
