A man walked into a tire store in Westbury Thursday night, held his hand in his waistband, "giving the impression that he possessed a gun," threw a pillowcase to the cashier and demanded he fill it with cash, Nassau County police said.

The robber fled and police are searching for him and hoping for help with information.

The robbery took place at the Mavis Discount Tires store at 885 Old Country Rd. at about 8:35 p.m., police said.

The robber, described as 6 feet and in his early 20s, wore a black hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask that covered the lower portion of his face, walked into the store and demanded cash, police said.

Police said the robber was "soft-spoken."

Despite the threat, police said no gun was displayed.

Following the robbery, the man fled onto Belmont Place toward Grand Boulevard. Police ask anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
