13th A.D.: Gun-toter raised alarms, was removed, at LI debate
This occurred Oct. 12 -- but worth noting for the record:
At the Plainview Jewish Center, Nassau police removed Jay G. Helfgott of Pomona, N.Y., from a debate. He'd worn a gun belt with a clearly visible 9mm pistol on his right hip, and was dressed in uniform with a "constable" patch on the left shoulder, according to Assemb. Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove).
"A supporter of Nassau County employee Robert Germino, Lavine’s Republican opponent, Helfgott was asked to leave before the start of the debate but refused to do so," said the Lavine camp. Germino is backed by gun-rights groups.
"Nassau Police were called after Helfgott refused to leave the event. Six police officers from the Second Precinct quickly responded and removed Helfgott from the room. The Ramapo Police Department confirmed that Helfgott held an unrestricted active handgun permit, issued by Rockland County."
