It’s not unusual for first-time political candidates to use some of their own money for their campaigns, but State Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City), a state legislator for almost 34 years, loaned $60,000 to his re-election campaign in July.

A spokeswoman insisted it was noting unusual, and that he simply wanted to make sure he had enough money on hand to pay bills.

Hannon has about $220,000 in his campaign treasury, according to his most recent filings with the state Board of Elections. He will face the winner of the Democratic primary between Plainview store owner Francesca Carlow and attorney David Mejias.
