As Nassau Republicans continue deliberating over their 4th Congressional District candidate, another political newcomer from the party has launched a grassroots campaign.

David Silverstein, a Merrick resident who operates a corporate executive search firm, filed papers this week with the Federal Election Commission to seek the seat being vacated by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola).

The 43-year-old Republican joins New Hyde Park attorney Frank Scaturro as GOP hopefuls who plan to run a campaign regardless of who party leaders choose as their candidate.

“I hope to sell to the people that I am one of them, and why pick more of the same when you can elect someone truly representative of their interests,” Silverstein, who has never held elected office on any level, said Thursday.

On his campaign website, Silverstein describes his core issues as including “individual sovereignty, state sovereignty, low taxes, smaller government, (and) a more rigid interpretation of the constitution.”

Raised in Merrick, Silverstein has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a masters from New York University. He owns the Manhattan-based executive search firm “HR Search Partners,” and previously worked as a psychologist.

He said he became more interested in politics through his recent involvement in Bellmore’s GOP Club, and has reached out to leaders of the Nassau Republican Committee to let them know of his interest in Congress, but has yet to hear back.

Silverstein said he hopes to appeal to national Political Action Committees with similar interests in hopes of gaining more support for his campaign. In the meantime, he said that he’ll use digital and social media to reach out to voters, and believes his fundraising, “for a grassroots campaign, is off to a good start.”
