Abrahams calls on feds to ban “Palcohol”

Nassau Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams (D-Freeport) has called on the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to prevent the sale of powdered alcohol.

News reports last week said that the bureau, which is part of the Treasury Department, had approved a product known as “Palcohol” in varieties such as vodka and rum.

But, a representative for the bureau later said the approvals were issued in error.

In the letter, Abrahams, a Democrat who is running for Congress to replace the retiring Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), said Palcohol “could create a public epidemic of alcohol abuse, specifically in teens.”

He said if the product is not made illegal by the fall – when it was originally scheduled to be put on the shelves – he would sponsor a bill to ban its sale in Nassau.
