The campaign of acting Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas has returned $1,000 donated by the De Rosa Foundation for Colon Cancer Research and Prevention, a Manhasset nonprofit that is barred from giving to political causes.

Singas refunded the money July 24, according to her latest filing with the state Board of Elections. The filings also show that on Aug. 6, foundation president Kathy De Rosa made a $1,000 personal contribution to Singas' campaign.

IRS rules prohibit nonprofits from engaging in partisan political activities but allow foundation officials to make personal contributions.

Singas' Democratic primary opponent, former Manhattan prosecutor Michael Scotto, said the issue "goes back to my opponent being a puppet of the Nassau County Democratic Party machine and therefore having little to no day-to-day involvement in her own campaign and political affairs."

The GOP nominee for district attorney, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, called the donation "distasteful."

Singas campaign spokesman Isaac Goldberg said, "Murray should stop using attacks on a colon cancer foundation to hide the fact that she has never practiced criminal law ... and has not practiced law in 17 years." He had no comment about Scotto's remarks.

The campaign filings show Singas has nearly $830,000 in cash on hand for the final month of the campaign to Scotto's $6,200. Murray, who does not face a primary, reported $538,000 on hand.
