Rep. Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) has been a rising star in Republican circles -- and now is eyeing a statewide candidacy in 2018, possibly for governor or U.S. senator.

Gibson, a moderate Republican and retired Army colonel, has won three terms in a Hudson Valley-Adirondacks district that supported President Barack Obama. Gibson announced last week he won't seek re-election to Congress.

Top Republicans who are high on Gibson said he learned from Rob Astorino's failed bid for governor that he must start raising campaign money before the election year begins. Democratic Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) would be up for re-election in 2018.
