WASHINGTON — Long Island Rep. Andrew Garbarino will oversee a critical congressional hearing as three top U.S. immigration enforcement officials are set to testify Feb. 10 before the Homeland Security Committee in the wake of two fatal shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis.

The hearing, announced Tuesday, will include the first congressional questioning of Todd Lyons, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Rodney Scott, the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection; and Joseph Edlow, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Garbarino’s panel has jurisdictional oversight over the Department of Homeland Security and these subagencies.

As the Homeland Security Committee chair, Garbarino (R-Bayport) has been facing intensifying calls from Democrats and others to hold a hearing into the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics. That pressure has been building since Jan. 7, when Renee Good, 37, was shot dead in Minneapolis by an ICE agent.

The shooting death in Minneapolis on Saturday of Alex Pretti, also 37, in an encounter with federal agents upped the pressure.

Other congressional committees also are diving into the turmoil and events in Minnesota. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the chairman of the Senate’s version of the Homeland Security Committee, has called on the three administration officials to testify to that panel on Feb. 12. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has agreed to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 3.
