BACKGROUND: 

  • Kaplan, 57, of North Hills, is serving her second term in the state Senate representing the 7th District after first being elected in 2018.
  • She is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business.
  • Kaplan holds an undergraduate degree from Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women and a law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. 

ISSUES:

  • Kaplan is an advocate for gun safety legislation, helping to author New York’s ban on unregistered and untraceable ghost guns.
  • She was a co-sponsor of the Reproductive Health Act that codified Roe v. Wade, as one of her first official acts in the state Senate and helped author New York's safe haven law protecting medical providers who provide lawful abortions to women from out of state.
  • Kaplan has proposed legislation establishing an educational program to prevent anti-Semitism, Islamophobia bias and discrimination based on religion, race, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
