In the Democratic primary race to challenge first-term Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin, Anna Throne-Holst leads opponent David Calone in fundraising and has $1.1 million in the bank compared with his $907,000, new campaign finance reports show.
But with the June 28 primary 10 weeks away, both Democrats trail Zeldin, of Shirley. Zeldin, who has no primary opponent, said he has $1.7 million in the bank for the general election after raising $474,144 in the first quarter of this year in what could be again the most expensive congressional race on Long Island.
Throne-Holst, a former Southampton Town supervisor, reported to the Federal Election Commission that she raised $312,121 from individuals and political action committees from January through March.
Calone, of Setauket, a venture capitalist and former Suffolk Planning Commission chairman, reported that he raised $206,645 from donors and PACs, including $2,447 that he contributed. He already had loaned his campaign $250,000.
In Nassau County, in the 4th Congressional District, Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) reported having $800,759 in cash on hand after raising $243,519 so far this year toward her first re-election campaign.
Her Republican challenger, businessman and Marine veteran David “Bull” Gurfein, of Manhasset, has $185,203 in cash in his campaign fund. He reported that he raised $49,397 in the first quarter of the year.
On the South Shore in the 2nd Congressional District in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) reported he raised $105,608 and has nearly $3 million on hand. Democrat DuWayne Gregory of Amityville, presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, said he had $83,183 in cash and raised $76,904 this year.
Friday was the deadline for congressional candidates to file campaign finance reports with the Federal Election Commission, but they had until midnight to do so.
The crowded field of candidates seeking to replace retiring Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) had not filed by early evening.
State Sen. Jack M. Martins (R-Old Westbury) did not file or respond to queries. But many of the Democratic hopefuls gave Newsday their top-line dollar amounts last week.
Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern, of Dix Hills: $445,000 cash on hand, $500,000 raised — including $68,000 in loans and contributions he made to his campaign; former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi: $375,000 in the bank, $450,000 raised; North Hempstead Town board member Anna Kaplan: $350,000 in cash, $445,000 included her loan of $100,000; and lawyer Jonathan Clarke: $800 raised.
