Another Kevins on Supreme Court ballot
Conservative Linda Kevins, a District Court judge in Suffolk County who also has Democratic and Independence Party backing for State Supreme Court in November, will not be the only member of her family on the judicial ballot in November.
Her husband, James Kevins, also a Conservative, last week became a candidate for Supreme Court in Queens — albeit only on the Republican ballot line in the heavily Democratic borough, leaving him with little chance of winning.
Local Republicans arranged for James Kevins, of Mount Sinai, to get the judicial nomination so he could drop out as the Conservative candidate for Brookhaven highway superintendent. There is no local residency requirement for Supreme Court candidates as long as they live in New York State.
His exit allowed Conservatives to endorse GOP incumbent highway chief Dan Losquadro in November.
Kevins joins GOP state Sen. Phil Boyle and Democrat Stuart Besen, who were Suffolk sheriff’s candidates and took the Independence Party line for Supreme Court in Nassau. It was the only legal way to drop their earlier nominations.
Party sources say Conservatives earlier had withheld support from Losquadro out of concern the Suffolk District attorney’s office had subpoenaed records from the highway department. No charges have materialized.
