Democrat
BACKGROUND:
- Gooding, 78, of Shelter Island Heights, narrowly lost the race for town supervisor in November. He's seeking to join his two Democratic running mates elected last November to the town board on a platform "A Better Island for All."
- He was chairman of the town’s Community Preservation Fund advisory committee for eight years.
- He is retired from a building materials and construction systems company.
ISSUES:
- Gooding said protecting drinking water, bays and creeks is one of his three top priorities. He said the town should provide residents more assistance to install innovative/alternative septic systems. He said the town should install I/A systems in municipal buildings, as well.
- A second priority is addressing affordable housing, he said. "Shelter Island is a unique place and we just need to hold onto it," he said.
- His third priority, he said, is balanced development. He said the town should not allow structures to be built within 100 feet of wetland, for example.
