Long Island's Assembly Republicans have become the reliable opposition to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo when it comes to the Common Core academic standards and exams.

They arguably have been more critical of the Democratic governor than any bloc in the State Legislature. Two strong reasons are likely --  the opt-out boycott of Common Core tests has been widespread on the Island, and the Assembly GOP in general has the most disagreements with Cuomo.

When the governor created his latest panel to look at Common Core, Assemb. Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook) was among those out in front with a news release headlined: "Stop Common Core, we don't need another commission."
