Rhode Island independent candidate for governor Lincoln Chafee is running a TV ad featuring President Barack Obama, the day after rival Democrat Frank Caprio said Obama could "shove it" for not endorsing him.
Chafee’s acting campaign manager, Mike Trainor, says the ad started airing Tuesday.
Chafee is a former Republican U.S. senator who left the party in 2007, a year after losing re-election. He made a high-profile endorsement of Obama in 2008, shortly before the Democratic primary.
Obama has not endorsed either candidate, but that didn’t stop Chafee from capitalizing on their past relationship.
The ad shows Obama talking at a 2008 rally about Chafee’s stand against the war in Iraq.
It also features independent New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg praising Chafee’s leadership and integrity.
