CHARLES E. SCHUMER

DEMOCRAT

BACKGROUND:

  • Schumer, 71, of Brooklyn, is making his fifth run for U.S. Senate from New York.
  • He also is running on the Working Families line.
  • He has held a public elective office since 1975.
  • He graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

ISSUES:

  • Schumer touts his accomplishments as Senate majority leader: an act that lowers drug costs and creates green jobs; an act that led Micron to plan a $100 billion computer chip plant near Syracuse, and an act to bring billions of dollars to New York for roads, bridges and airports.
  • Schumer promises to pass legislation to codify abortion rights, interracial and same-sex marriage, voting rights and transparent campaign finance, universal background checks and an assault weapon ban, comprehensive immigration reform and canceling student debt.
  • A top priority for Schumer is to restore the full deduction on federal income taxes for state and local tax payments.
