Chris Cox trying to get name on Sept. 14 ballot

Republican congressional contender Christopher Cox last week began circulating petitions to wage what's called an "Opportunity to Ballot," aimed at setting up a write-in primary Sept. 14 against Randy Altschuler, the minor party's designee.

Cox needs at least 554 signatures of Conservative voters by July 22 to qualify - and double that to survive the likely petition challenge. Then, Cox faces the labor-intensive task of arming supporters with ink pads and rubber stamps, the most effective way to survive a recount challenge. Altschuler will have it much easier: His name will appear on the ballot.

Cox said a number of Conservatives in the district expressed desire for a choice. Edward Walsh, Suffolk party chairman, asserted there is "no way" Cox's effort will succeed.
