ALBANY — A New York judge on Friday officially moved the state’s primaries for Congress and State Senate to Aug. 23 to provide time to replace district maps that have been declared unconstitutional.
State Supreme Court Justice Patrick McAllister pushed the primaries back from their original date of June 28. That had been expected, following Wednesday’s ruling by New York’s highest court tossing out maps approved by the State Legislature earlier this year.
That ruling didn’t impact maps for the State Assembly. So, for now, primaries for the Assembly and statewide offices, including governor and lieutenant governor, remain on track to take place June 28.
Asked Friday about the chances that all the primaries might be moved to August, Gov. Kathy Hochul called the situation fluid and said more information would be available early next week.
"There's a lot of fluidity around this,” Hochul told Spectrum News. "I'm going to ask your patience."
Later, she said: "I don't know if there's going to more litigation around this, so it really is too premature to give a firm answer. This is April, this will be settled in enough time for voters to know the situation as well as the candidates."
