Cuomo: Brooklyn assemblyman should resign

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is joining the growing list of elected officials who want state Assemblyman Vito Lopez to call it quits.

His office said the longtime Brooklyn Democrat should resign following his censure by the Assembly's ethics committee for allegedly sexually harassing staff members.

"Sexual harassment at the workplace cannot be tolerated in any shape or form," Cuomo spokesman Josh Vlasto said in a statement Sunday.

Lopez, who is the chairman of the Brooklyn Democrats, has not publicly commented since Friday's decision, but his attorney denied the charges.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio also have called on the 71-year-old to resign.

"Assemblyman Lopez has violated the trust and safety of his staff, and broken faith with the people he represents," de Blasio said in a statement.
