ALBANY — Cynthia Nixon told supporters Thursday her campaign against Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is a “David and Goliath fight we can win," saying the polls are underestimating the enthusiasm on the political left.

Nixon said traditional polls — which show Cuomo 30 points ahead — are missing voters. She likened her campaign to that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was said to be down 30 percentage points but upset veteran Rep. Joseph Crowley in June.

“I firmly believe we’re going to have a new progressive governor and Democratic control of both houses of the [state] Legislature,” Nixon told a crowd of about 60 at an Albany church. "When people come together, incumbents can fall."

She said Cuomo “is not so much interested in being governor anymore” and wants to run for president. She contended the governor is making President Donald Trump a foil because he’s afraid to take her on in the upcoming Democratic primary. Nixon and Cuomo are ramping up their campaigns ahead of their one and only debate, Aug. 29 in Hempstead.
