Cuomo suggests bump in cap on rent-controlled apartments

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday suggested a modest increase in the dollar limit for New York City apartments subject to rent control. But, notably, the governor didn't suggest raising the number as high as some other Democrats want.
Cuomo said apartments that rent for $2,700 or less per month should be subject to rent-control laws. Currently, the trigger is $2,500.
"I think that would be a reasonable proposal," Cuomo said on "The Capitol Pressroom," a public radio program. "You have more extreme proposals out there, but I think that is reasonable."
That was an apparent reference to a proposal favored by Assembly Democrats that would raise the maximum to $3,500.
The Republican-led Senate is expected to fight the Democrats on rent control and have countered with a proposal to make permanent the state's 2 percent cap on property-tax increases -- an idea many Democrats oppose.
