Cuomo watch: Objection overruled on nominee
The State Senate, when it reconvenes this week, is likely to approve Jenny Rivera, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's nominee for New York's highest court.
But there will be bruised feelings.
Rivera has sparked controversy because she's spent the bulk of her career in academia, not as an active lawyer or judge. And she worked for Cuomo when he was attorney general. He's not the first, though, to nominate a former underling to the state Court of Appeals.
One conservative Democrat and many Republicans have said Rivera isn't qualified for the post. But when Senate co-leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) said he supported Cuomo's right to choose, it signaled that Rivera likely will be confirmed after a noisy debate.-- Yancey Roy
