Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was asked if his proposals such as state-worker wage freezes and tax and spending caps were aimed at drawing GOP voters.

"I want support for these positions from all New Yorkers," he said. " . . . I think a hyper-partisan effort, to try to divide this state now by party lines, is a mistake."

This week, of course, Democrats will nominate him for governor at their state convention in Rye Brook.

Cuomo's campaign-agenda booklet has the form and feel of a governor's state-of-the-state message.

CHARGED UP: Top aides to Gov. David A. Paterson were piqued, sources said, that the the Long Island Power Authority board formed a search committee to seek a successor to Long Island Association-bound chief executive Kevin Law. Leadership of the authority is decided by the governor, insiders said.

FLASHBACK: Law was quoted in February 2007 saying he'd bring a "Steve Levy-Eliot Spitzer kind of governing" to the utility by minimizing costs and cutting waste. Law had been a deputy to the Suffolk executive. These days the two politicians' names aren't voluntarily linked much as Levy tries to run for governor on the Republican line.

CASH IN: Nassau Comptroller George Maragos is ready to put up $5 million of his own money to challenge Sen. Charles Schumer, GOP sources say. Maragos, saying he plans to announce Wednesday, wouldn't confirm a figure but said he'd spend personal funds and raise other money. Republican Gary Berntsen announced yesterday. William Brenner of Grahamsville has also circulated his name.

SMALL POND, N.Y.: Ex-Nassau Executive Thomas Suozzi and county Democratic vice chairman Thomas Garry joined the Harris Beach law firm. Republican Henry Wojtaszek practices in the firm's Niagara office. Wojtaszek was Nassau Republican chairman Joseph Mondello's choice last year to succeed him as GOP state chairman against Ed Cox.

NASSAU NEXUS: A teachers' union official spoke to Democrat Carrie Solages of Elmont about a primary against state Sen. Craig Johnson(D-Port Washington). But Solages, of Elmont, says he plans to run again for the Nassau legislature.

INTERN-ALS: One of the first things downstaters learned last year about Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat, was that she once was an intern for Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, Republican. Now Republican Greg Edwards, the Chautauqua executive, is running for lieutenant governor. He was an intern decades ago for Rep. Stan Lundine, Democrat, and later LG.
