DA Rice: Inside track for some party-leader backing

Followup to Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko's endorsement of Sean Coffey for AG: Local political sources note that Nassau DA Kathleen Rice is expected to get support from the Suffolk Democrats' executive committee -- which of course can directly deliver weighted votes at the state party convention in May.

Similarly, Assemb. Richard Brodsky's local endorsements from fellow legislators do not have the same practical effect as party committee endorsements, it is pointed out.

Speaking of internal party support, Liz B had this item on Rice appearing to have some edge in getting backing from Assemb. Vito Lopez' Brooklyn organization.

At the same time, you have one-time Congresswoman, Brooklyn DA and NYC comptroller Liz Holtzman with her name in the mix. From the Holtzman circle, this statement:

If the primary election for NYS Attorney General were held today, Elizabeth Holtzman, former member of Congress, Brooklyn district attorney and NYC comptroller would have at least a 20 point lead over the six candidates currently running.

“It is my considered opinion that if Liz Holtzman runs, she will be a very strong candidate and would begin as the odds-on front runner for Attorney General in New York,” said Douglas E. Schoen, who conducted the statewide poll of 500 likely Democratic voters.

Elizabeth Holtzman emerged as the clear front runner by a wide margin in every category surveyed. The poll was conducted to evaluate the viability of a Holtzman candidacy for the office of New York State Attorney General.
