Trump in Woodbury: If I win in NY, ‘the election is over’

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump told an estimated 3,000 Long Island Republicans on Wednesday night in Woodbury that he would rebuild the country’s infrastructure, secure the border and end the flow of heroin into the region.

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, delivered a rousing 40-minute speech at the Nassau County Republican Committee’s $200-per-ticket spring dinner, where he attacked both his former GOP rivals and his likely Democratic opponent, former Sen. Hillary Clinton.

And after winning New York’s April 19 GOP primary, Trump said he would pull off an upset in November and win the state, which has an overwhelming majority of Democratic voters.

“And if we win in New York, the election is over,” Trump said, adding that he would secure a majority of votes on Long Island and upstate.

While offering few specifics, Trump said that in his first 100 days in office he would send Congress an infrastructure bill to rebuild the nation’s roads, bridges and tunnels. “Our country is falling apart,” he said. “It’s like a Third World country.”

He also pledged to immediately repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, “cancel job-killing regulations,” renegotiate trade deals, rebuild the nation’s inner cities and begin “design and construction” of a wall on the Southern border.

“We are letting people into our country that we shouldn’t be letting in,” he said. “We are letting people come in from Syria and we have no idea who they are.”

Hitting on issues critical to many Long Islanders, Trump said he would cut off the flow of heroin from Mexico and repeal the Common Core education curriculum.

Trump also took shots at Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, his vanquished GOP presidential rivals, and members of the “dishonest media.”

But he saved his harshest language for Clinton, arguing she would abolish the Second Amendment and open the borders for undocumented immigrants. Clinton has rejected both attacks as untrue.

“If Hillary gets in, the country will never be the same again,” Trump said.

Trump also dismissed what analysts call one of his biggest vulnerabilities in the general election — women. Trump said “the women like me much better than the polls show” to thunderous applause from women in the audience.

The event attracted a litany of current and former Nassau elected officials. But in a departure from recent Trump events on Long Island and across the country, the speech attracted no protesters.

Trump’s appearance comes after Nassau Republican Party chairman Joe Mondello endorsed the real estate developer last month, before the candidate’s well-attended rally in Bethpage.

Mondello on Wednesday said Trump had attracted millions of new Republican voters who “are fed up with the political elite.” He called Trump “the right leader at the right time for America. He will make America great again.”
