Elections for Suffolk treasurer nixed for good
There will be no election for the $192,191-a-year job of county treasurer this November, leaving candidates that Republicans and Democrats nominated with no race to run.
The contest was scrubbed after the county legislature approved a resolution in June to move up the merger of the treasurer job with the comptroller's office to Jan. 1, 2016. However, that measure included a provision, which gave voters to 60 days circulate petitions to force a referendum on the issue.
The deadline for filing petitions passed last Monday, but not a single signature was presented. About 16,000 signatures were needed to force a referendum, which could have delayed the merger until 2018.
Both parties had put up election workers as candidates -- the Democrats named Matthew Bucaro Jr. of Huntington while the GOP named Irene D'Abramo of Stony Brook. D'Abramo even formed a fundraising committee, Count on Irene. But now, Comptroller John Kennedy will take control of the merged office in the new year.
