Connaughton, 61, of Garden City, is a registered Democrat and is running on the Democratic party line in the general election.
She was previously a journalist for Reuters and for almost two decades worked around the world, from war zones to global summits.
She has a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in international affairs and global leadership from Columbia University.

Connaughton said she wants to go back to the basics of education, removing all tech and AI from K-8 reading and writing and building critical thinking skills.
She said health insurance companies and pharmaceuticals take the largest share of every healthcare dollar instead of that money reaching patients and vows to work to help make healthcare more affordable.
Connaughton said she wants to end the era of career politicians, who she said serve their donors and bring nothing back to the district.
