BACKGROUND:

• Welker, 60, of Southampton, is seeking the 2nd Legislative District seat.
• She has been a Southampton Town trustee since 2018 and is an exercise physiologist at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
• She graduated from Adelphi University with a master’s in sociology and a bachelor’s in business and finance.

ISSUES:

• Drinking water and surface-water quality are the No. 1 issue for Welker. She said she supports a proposal to hold a referendum on a 0.125% sales tax increase to fund a countywide wastewater treatment overhaul.
• She said it is important to decrease the county’s dependence on fossil fuels and supports initiatives such as exploring the electrification of the county’s bus system.
• She stressed the importance of working across party lines and notes that she served in the minority party as a Southampton trustee.
