BACKGROUND:
- Holst, 71, of Smithtown, is seeking his first term as town clerk.
- He was Smithtown’s town attorney from 1987 to 1988, represented Smithtown in the Suffolk County Legislature from 1997 to 1999 and served one term as Suffolk County clerk in 1989. Holst also ran for town supervisor in 2005 but was not elected.
- He graduated from New York University, and has a law degree from St. John’s University.
ISSUES:
- Holst’s top priorities are increasing transparency within the town clerk’s office and creating a sense of openness when dealing with the public.
- During his time in the legislature, he said he championed causes including the environment and revitalizing downtown areas through bipartisan cooperation.
- He said his years of experience as county clerk and in county government can help him serve the needs of Smithtown residents as town clerk.
