DAVID B. LYS

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Lys, 47, is seeking a second full term on the town council. He was appointed to a one-year term in 2018 and subsequently won a special election for another one-year term. In 2019, he was elected to a four-year term.
  • He holds a bachelor’s in kinesiology from Penn State University and owns East Hampton Physical Therapy in Montauk and East Hampton Kayak & Fitness with his wife, Rachel. They live in Springs with their four daughters.
  • He chairs the Amagansett Life-Saving and Coast Guard Station Society and has also served on the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals.

ISSUES:

  • Lys supports efforts to protect water quality and cited cost of living as a key issue the town must tackle through affordable housing initiatives. He said he also supports considering zoning changes that could limit the size of new homes.
  • Recreation and beach access is also a priority, and he supports defending public access in Napeague. “I fully believe in unfettered access of the public to our beaches because it’s our greatest natural resource that’s out here,” he said.
  • He said the East Hampton Airport has provided some benefit to the community, but that he supports a “self-sufficient” facility with limited traffic to reduce noise.
