MARIA C. SCHEURING

Democratic

BACKGROUND:

  • Scheuring, 52, of Smithtown, is seeking her first term in office.
  • She ran unsuccessfully for town supervisor in 2021 and is an attorney in private practice. She is on the board of directors for the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, teaches at St. Joseph’s College and is also the chairperson for the “Alive After 5” summer festivals in Patchogue.
  • She graduated from Fordham University School of Law and from Franciscan University of Steubenville, in Steubenville, Ohio.

ISSUES:

  • Scheuring said she is concerned with the lack of progress on sewer projects in town, as well as empty storefronts.
  • She criticized the town board’s vote last year to pass a budget that increased the board members’ salaries by 10.5% and the supervisor’s by 22%.
  • She said her top priorities are holding town meetings at night to make them more accessible for residents, securing more funding for sewer projects and cracking down on vacant storefronts with tougher penalties for property owners.
